What Are Dental Crowns?

Also referred to as a cap, a dental crown is often made from either porcelain or porcelain fused to metal and fits over an existing tooth after it has been prepared, or is used to replace a tooth after dental implant surgery or a root canal. They’re completely customized and made in a dental lab here in Toronto after we’ve taken the appropriate measures and dental molds.

Therefore, if you have damaged teeth due to cracks or chips or need a tooth removed due to an infection, then dental crowns may be the perfect solution for you. Porcelain is a popular dental material because of its durability and natural-looking appearance. The colour can be tailored to suit the rest of your natural teeth and it can last upwards of 15 years, following the proper oral hygiene.

How Dental Crowns Are Placed

After we’ve determined if you’re the perfect candidate for a dental crown, we can begin the next necessary steps. But first, if you have damaged teeth that need to be extracted, you’ll have to wait until you’ve thoroughly healed before we implement your permanent crown and will receive a temporary crown in the meantime. We’ll file the tooth down so it’s like an abutment and the crown can fit perfectly over top. This is done after applying local anesthesia, so you won’t feel a thing!

While your custom dental crown is made in Toronto, it may take a couple of weeks until it’s fully prepared and sent to our office. We’ll provide you with detailed instructions on how to look after your temporary crown after preparing the tooth. While wearing a temporary crown, it’s important to remember to avoid sticky or chewy foods so it doesn’t become loose or damaged.

Once your final crown is ready, it can be cemented into place and we’ll ensure it fits and you’re 100% happy with it. You will have to visit our office a couple of times throughout your dental crown procedure, but we’ll also ensure you’re 100% comfortable every time. If you’re still nervous or anxious, ask about our sedation services.

Looking After Your Dental Crown

Dental crowns are easy to look after as you just have to follow your normal oral hygiene routine – brush twice daily, followed by rinsing with mouthwash and flossing your teeth once a day. Continuing to brush and floss your teeth is essential in ensuring your crown lasts as long as it should. Though porcelain is often stain-resistant, it can still yellow over time if food debris and bacteria are left for long periods of time in between your teeth. You should also continue to visit us every six months for checkups and general cleaning. We promise we’ll make your visit comfortable and worthwhile and we always enjoy seeing you and catching up.
